Scratby Coastal Erosion Group - Norfolk

The aim of SCEG is to protect and conserve the beaches, cliffs, coastline and land at Scratby, Norfolk, UK, which is being damaged by a variation of climate change, offshore dredging and the lack of will from Central Government and its Agencies to protect our coastlines properly.

People enjoy walking the beach and cliff tops, observing the sea and the wildlife. We all love the area both those that live in Scratby and our many visitors and those that are interested in Norfolk's environmental problems.

We aim to establish all the facts concerning coastal erosion relating to our coastline and to investigate its cause and effect and to that end we are talking with Government, Local Authorities and other interested parties.

Additionally we are researching all options, commenting on information received and establishing the validity of such information. In order too present our ultimate argument and propose the necessary course of action to minimise or obviate the effects and threat of coastal erosion to our village to those who can act upon said information.

People who live in Scratby and visitors should be very concerned about the Government's lack of plans to help us. They have just anounced via the latest Shoreline Management Plan that instead of "Hold the Line", as outlined 5 years ago, they have moved to "No Active Intervention".
So they recommend not protecting Scratby in the future.

If we allow the sea to take land from the village the following will happen:

Loss of our beach. Loss of the dunes, plants and cliffs
Loss of cliff walks and roads. Loss of wildlife
Loss of homes & businesses. Damage to our important tourist industry
Reduced property prices throughout the village, because of the erosion and beach loss. People buy by the coast to enjoy the seaside. We won't have one soon!

Thank you for visiting this site we hope you find it interesting and informative and should you wish to help financially, by joining the committee, or in any other way, please contact us via our 'Contact' page.
